چکیده

An 800 l liquid xenon scintillation γ ray detector is being developed for the MEG experiment which will search for μ → eγ decay at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100 l prototype with an active volume of 372×372×496 mm to study the scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring cosmic rays and α sources. By using a suitable purification technique, an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The effects of the light absorption on the energy resolution are estimated by Monte Carlo simulation.

Scintillation light from gamma ray irradiations in liquid xenon is detected by two Hamamatsu R9288 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) immersed in the liquid. UV light reflector material, PTFE, is used to optimize the light collection efficiency. The detector gives a high light yield of 6 photoelectron per keV (pe/keV), which allows efficient detection of the 122 keV γ-ray line from 57 Co, with a good...

LXeGRIT is a balloon-borne Compton telescope based on a liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) for imaging cosmic γ–rays in the energy band of 0.2-20 MeV. The detector, with 400 cm 2 area and 7 cm drift gap, is filled with high purity LXe. Both ionization and scintillation light signals are detected to measure the energy deposits and the three spatial coordinates of individual γ–ray inte...

Development of a liquid - xenon photon detector – – towards the search for a muon rare decay mode at Paul Scherrer Institute q

We are developing a new type of photon detector in preparation of an experiment to search for muons decaying into positrons and gamma rays. In the experiment, the photon detector will utilize liquid xenon (Xe) as the scintillation material because of its fast response, large light yield, and high density. The scintillation light emitted in liquid Xe will be observed directly by positioning phot...

We present details of the technical design and manufacture of the ZEPLIN-III dark matter experiment. ZEPLIN-III is a two-phase xenon detector which measures both the scintillation light and the ionisation charge generated in the liquid by interacting particles and radiation. The instrument design is driven by both the physics requirements and by the technology requirements surrounding the use o...
